Quick Answer
Divide each item’s cost by its weight in the same unit. The lower result is the better deal for that unit of weight.
How to Calculate Price per Weight
- Choose the weight unit you want to compare.
- Enter the cost and weight for the first item.
- Enter the cost and weight for the second item.
- Compare the two rates and pick the lower one.
Formula
Price per weight = total cost / weight
Cheaper item = item with the lower price per selected unit
Difference = higher rate - lower rate
Worked Examples
Example 1: $24 for 300 g gives $0.08 per gram.
Example 2: $29 for 450 g gives about $0.064 per gram, so it is cheaper than Example 1.
Example 3: If you switch the unit to pounds, both rates convert before the comparison is shown.
How to Interpret Your Results
| Output | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Lower rate | The item gives better value per unit weight | Use it as the baseline for comparison |
| Small gap | The two products are close in value | Check quality, brand, or package size |
| Large gap | One item is clearly more expensive per unit weight | Buy the lower-rate option if quality is similar |
