Pool Salt Calculator

Estimate the amount of salt needed to raise your pool from the current salt level to the target level.

The result is shown in pounds and kilograms, with an estimate of how many bags you will need.

Quick Answer

If the pool salt level is below the target, the calculator estimates the pounds or kilograms of salt needed to reach the target concentration.

How to Calculate Pool Salt

  1. Enter your pool volume and choose gallons or liters.
  2. Enter the current and target salt levels in ppm.
  3. Set the weight of one salt bag.
  4. Read the salt amount and the number of bags required.

Formula

Salt needed (lb) = pool volume (gal) x salt difference (ppm) x 8.34 / 1,000,000

Bags needed = salt needed / bag weight

Worked Examples

Example 1: A 20,000 gallon pool that needs 700 ppm more salt requires about 117 lb of salt.

Example 2: If your current level is already at the target, the result is zero.

Example 3: A 40 lb bag count is simply the salt total divided by 40 and rounded up.

How to Interpret Your Results

ResultMeaningAction
ZeroNo salt is needed or the pool is already at targetCheck the measurement and retest if needed
Small amountOnly a few bags are neededAdd salt gradually and retest after mixing
Large amountSignificant adjustment is neededAdd in stages to avoid overshooting the target

Frequently Asked Questions

Salt levels in pools are usually measured in parts per million, so ppm is the natural unit for the calculation.

It is usually safer to add salt in stages, circulate the water, and test again.

Yes. The calculator converts liters to gallons before applying the same salt formula.
