🫘 GFR Calculator

Calculate your Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) using the CKD-EPI equation to assess kidney function.

What is GFR?

Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is the best overall index of kidney function. It estimates how much blood passes through the glomeruli (tiny filters in the kidneys) each minute. A normal GFR is typically above 90 mL/min/1.73m².

CKD-EPI Equation

The CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) equation is the recommended method for estimating GFR. It's more accurate than the older MDRD equation, especially at higher GFR values.

Factors Affecting GFR

  • Age: GFR naturally declines with age
  • Gender: Men typically have higher muscle mass
  • Muscle Mass: Affects creatinine production
  • Diet: High protein intake can increase creatinine
  • Medications: Some drugs affect kidney function

When to See a Doctor

Consult a healthcare provider if you have:

  • eGFR consistently below 60
  • Protein in urine
  • Family history of kidney disease
  • Diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Swelling in legs or face
Note: This calculator uses the 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation which does not include race as a variable.
