Understanding Corrected Age

Corrected age (also called adjusted age) is used for premature babies to account for their early arrival. It calculates how old the baby would be if they had been born on their due date.

Why Use Corrected Age?

  • Developmental Milestones: Healthcare providers use corrected age to assess if premature babies are meeting developmental milestones.
  • Growth Charts: Some growth charts use corrected age for premature infants up to 2 years of age.
  • Parental Guidance: Helps parents understand their baby's developmental progress more accurately.

How to Calculate

Corrected Age = Current Date - Due Date (instead of Birth Date)

For example, if a baby was born 8 weeks early and is now 6 months old chronologically, their corrected age would be 4 months.

Note: Most healthcare providers use corrected age until the child is about 2 years old. After that, the difference between chronological and corrected age becomes less significant.
