How Blood Type Inheritance Works
Blood type is determined by two genes — one inherited from each parent. The ABO system has three alleles: A, B, and O. The Rh factor (positive or negative) is determined by a separate gene. Together, these determine the eight possible blood types: A+, A−, B+, B−, AB+, AB−, O+, and O−.
